Abandoned/ speculative attraction and design work

Looking back through hastily archived folders, lead me to discover a number of concepts, scribbles and images from various proposals or early designs that I thought might be fun to put in one place and share.

These are mostly working designs, so forgive the sketchy nature. Personally I like seeing notebooks and working process….

Illusions

Some speculative work designed for a museum chain. Firstly, a few layouts for creating a “walking through the wall” illusion, using variations on the Pepper’s Ghost technique.

Some work was done using 3DS Max/ VRay to try and examine the look of the effect from a viewer’s POV, as well as outlining some of the issues, such as shadow-casting and shadow variance. Pepper’s Ghost relies on heavy chiaroscuro effects, a bright light isolated within dark areas to work well. As can be seen, darker areas from hair or shadows really mess with the illusion.
I also explored working with additional animated effects (easier using a camera set-up, but potentially harder with a physical set-up).

Some variations, including a “portal room” where you can see your own bum!

I can’t recall the exact nature of this next idea, but it involved some sort of spatial audio illusion. Rendered n 3DS Max and VRay, I think.

Next up, a room of infinity mirrors

Rig

Some sketch, concept design and paintover for a themed event night themed as a rig introducing a new events and extreme sports venue on a converted and themed rig.

Public Building Makeover

Some odds and ends from work towards trying to give a fresh visitor experience to a public building.

Experience Posters

Had to include these for a bit of fun. Very quick posters knocked up with collage and found images (and, in some cases, artworks of mine from other sources) in an effort to spur ideas and development for new experiential spaces (or something). Here are some I made.

More Aquariums

I found some more bits and pieces for initial proposals for another aquarium project.

Front desk – some visualisation and design development.

Giant Jelly – interactive Jellyfish development

Jelly Tunnel – using orthographic projection to create a disorientating immersion

Plankton – interactive floor projection

Penguin pals – interactive projection involving penguins

Rockpools – Interactive digital tables

Miscellaneous – snaps of other bits including ocean tunnel and interactives
